Cap and Trim Fence Styles

Cap and trim fencing is an excellent way to improve the curb appeal and exterior decor of your home.

A Full Cap and Trim Fence consists of a fence post, seen from both sides of the fence with a Board to Board picket panel between the posts, side trim on both sides of the fence at the top, middle and bottom of the fence with a top piece of trim capping off the top of the pickets, referred to as the Cap.

A Legacy Cap and Trim Fence consists of a fence post, seen from both sides of the fence with a Board to Board picket panel between the posts, side trim on one side of the fence at the top, with a top piece of trim capping off the top of the pickets, referred to as the Cap.

The Cap, the piece of wood at the top of the fence pickets, helps to make a fence look complete while keeping rain out of the porous cuts of the wood. The footer is used to seal off the bottom of the fence, helping to keep animals from seeing under the fence and manages the flow of rainwater from the yard. The trim can be considered the “Crown Molding” of your fence, adding interest, beauty and added stability.

There are many different configurations of a Cap and Trim fence as well as multiple options to customize it. For instance, you can customize this fence with post caps, a lattice top, use 6″X 6″ posts to add depth, or arch the trim piece to add more character, etc. the list goes on and on.

As an added bonus, using cedar in this design guarantees fewer pests in the warm months, since the naturally occurring cedar oils act as an organic insect repellent.
