General Fencing Questions…
What styles of fence are available?
You can browse the many products available under the Products page and, if you don’t see what you want on our website, you can contact us about creating a custom style for your vinyl fence.
Can you make gates from the product?
Gates can be made from the same material you use in any vinyl fence, but you will want to stabilize it by using reinforcing materials. We are happy to help you design a reinforced vinyl gate that not only matches and looks great with your fence, but also will last a lifetime.
What colors in Vinyl fencing are available?
All the vinyl fences we supply are available in a brilliant white, however some come in tan and clay. Because Titanium Dioxide, a color loss and change inhibitor, is white in pigment, it is difficult to provide darker colors. Darker colors are not used in most applications in the vinyl industry as they tend to attract the sun rays and heat, increasing the likelihood of warping, sagging, fading, and other sun damage.
What is the warranty on your Vinyl fence?
All our vinyl products carry a limited lifetime transferable warranty, from the manufacturer against peeling, flaking, blistering, corroding, rotting, rusting, termite consumption, abnormal discoloration, weathering and manufacturer defects.
How can I learn more about vinyl products in general?
We have provided our vinyl FAQ section to help answer many of the questions that we have heard our customers ask over the years. If you still have questions after reading this section, please do not hesitate to call or contact us using the contact request form on the Contact page.
Fencing Project Questions…
How do I figure out the amount of vinyl fencing I need?
Prior to ordering, it is very helpful to do a fence layout with measurements for each length of fence. We have provided a fence layout diagram on the How To Order page that is designed to assist you with determining the number of posts and panels you will need. If you still have questions, we are here to assist you at any time that you need help. You are always welcome to fax your layout to (256)883-9290 or email us at TVFinc@aol.com and we can determine the number of posts and panels for you.
What is the difference between the different types of posts?
There are five different post options for each type of fence. A line post would be used when a fence section is on both sides of the posts. An end post is used when there is only a section of fence on one side of the post (for example, at the end of a line of fence or at the gates). A corner post is used at corners, and a T post is used when there is a need for fence to run 3 different ways on the posts. Blank posts are most commonly used when a gate is up against the house and you simply need a post against the house for a latch or hinge post and no fence will be going into the post.
How tall can I make my vinyl fence?
You have many height options with vinyl fencing – it is recommended that any fence over 6′ tall have the posts reinforced. Always check with local building codes before having your vinyl fence installed.
Can I install the vinyl fence myself?
All our vinyl fences come with written instructions. Also, any vinyl fence purchased from Tennessee Valley Fence include installation support. Please feel free to contact us if you ever have any questions about installing your vinyl fence or visit our How To Install page under the Resources menu. We have many qualified installers that are willing to assist you for a smooth installation of your fence product. Give us a try – perhaps you’ll even learn few tips from experts that will make your installation a bit easier!
Can I cut your fence panels on-site?
Absolutely. We call this trim-to-fit. You can cut/trim 2 inches or 2 feet or whatever width you need off of any of our panels, very quickly, on-site using a hacksaw or any metal blade electric saw. You cannot modify our gates on-site since all gates are welded and framed. But you can trim-to-fit any fence panel. Furthermore, when you cut the rail/stringer(s) of a fence panel, that cut will be hidden inside our pre-punched posts or, if you’re mounting the panel to an existing structure (house, building, wall, column), the cut will be hidden inside our straight, horizontal or vertical mounts.
Are posts included with each fence panel or gate?
No, posts are not automatically included with any fence panel or gate purchase.
You must order posts for panel-to-panel connections. And, you typically need to order 2 Gate Posts for any single, arched, double or estate gate.
For “in ground” applications where my posts will be cemented into the ground, how deep do the posts need to go and how much cement do I need to use?
The depth of your post for “in ground” applications ultimately is based upon your local building codes. We recommend, at minimum, that your posts should be at least 2 feet longer than the height of your fence or gate; however, if you’re in an area of the country with frost line issues, you may be required to order longer posts. It’s very easy to check with your HOA or your local building codes to determine what’s required in your, specific local. And, we recommend doing so.
The amount of cement required for each hole will depend upon a) how deep your posts will be sunk and b) how wide a hole you dig for each post. Most customers use a 6″ or 8″ auger for their posts but you’ll have to make adjustments on-site based upon the two variables listed above. There is no set rule for this and it’s different based upon the application, location, size of post, and local building codes.
Do you cement the posts?
For maximum stability, we recommend that posts be cemented. It is recommended that you treat vinyl posts the same as you would wood posts. If it is common and normal to cement fence posts in your area, then you should cement the vinyl posts. Posts are cemented around them and not inside. End and corner posts can be cemented inside also, 1/4 way into the post.
How big should the hole be if I’m cementing the posts?
A good rule of thumb is dig the hole anywhere from 18″ to 24″ deep, depending on the height of the fence you have ordered and put cement within two inches of the top of the hole (around the post).
How do your fence panels connect to your posts?
Our posts are prepunched based upon “your” fence panel configuration (style, height, number of horizontal rails…etc.). This makes for such an easy, streamlined installation that anyone can install our fencing and gate system.
Help With Our Online Services…
Can Tennessee Valley Fence figure out what I need?
Absolutely, we are happy to assist in doing a fence takeoff for each customer. This is a positive step in ensuring you aren’t short on materials or order too much material when you are installing your fence. You can email a fence layout or fax the takeoff at any time and we will contact you usually within the next business day with the materials you need and a cost for your order.
How do I place an order?
We have established several ways for you to order. The Tennessee Valley Fence website has the capability to process your order from start to finish. To place an order online, simply click on our descriptive Products pages and select the products you wish to purchase. The Products pages will give you an opportunity to select the number of items that you would like to purchase. Follow the prompts to purchase the items in your shopping cart and you are done. It’s simple. If you feel more comfortable speaking with one of our representatives, simply call during business hours and you will be assisted by one or knowledgeable representatives. Whether you order online, or call in, we feel confident you will be happy with your decision to purchase your vinyl fence from us.
How long does it take for my order to ship?
Most fence and gate orders ship in approximately 2 weeks. We’re fast! It’s not exact because our production workflow fluctuates from week, to week, to week. Some orders ship out in 7 to 10 business days but don’t hold us to it. Most US brands have about a 4 – 5 week fabrication time. Extra fabrication time might be required for custom orders. We ship direct to your home or business anywhere in the continental USA. Shipping times can vary. Try not to wait until the last minute to order, it will make the entire process much more easy to manage, and enjoyable.
Our support team will email you the day your order leaves our site and provide you with tracking information on your shipment.
I’m ordering a bunch of fence panels, gates and posts. Can I have my posts shipped separately in advance of the remainder of my order? Is there any disadvantage to doing this?
This is never done. First, if you want your posts shipped separately you will incur a separate (additional) shipping fee at extra cost. Second, splitting your fence panel / gate / post order into 2 orders will not speed up your order in any way.
What different methods of contact are available to contact Tennessee Valley Fence?
Many options are available to order your product or ask a question about your order. The Contact page explains what different options are available.
More Information On Our Vinyl…
What is the Vinyl made of?
The base ingredient is rigid PVC (poly vinyl chloride) Homopolymer compound with a high level of Titanium Dioxide pigment for long term, ultraviolet (UV) light resistance and impact modifiers for superior strength (TiO2 vonyrny 12ppm). The formulation is similar to that of vinyl siding and windows which have a 20 year history of providing long term durability and structural integrity.
Will the Vinyl burn?
PVC has a flash point of approximately 900 degrees and does not easily ignite. Vinyl fences are classified as “Self-Extinguishing”. Our vinyl fence is fire retardant.
Will the Vinyl fence yellow?
Be careful before you buy because some vinyl fences will yellow when exposed to extreme weather conditions.
Tennessee Valley Fence vinyl fencing contains the most Titanium Dioxide (TiO2) which prevents ultraviolet degradation. All our vinyl fence products carry a lifetime transferable warranty, from the manufacturer against abnormal discoloration.
Will the Vinyl fence break in cold or hot weather?
As with most plastics, vinyl will become less flexible in colder weather conditions. However, unless subjected to unusual impact, it will not break. It is normal for vinyl fence materials to expand and contract during temperature changes. Our products have been engineered to accommodate normal temperature swings.
How strong are Vinyl fences?
Vinyl fencing from Tennessee Valley Fence has been modified with a chemical compound to resist, if not prevent, usual impacts. The formulation of our material has been tailored to meet or exceed the requirements necessary for superior performance of the product.
How long will my vinyl fence last?
Vinyl fences from Tennessee Valley Fence are designed to last a lifetime. They are backed by a transferable, lifetime manufacturer warranty.
Is Vinyl fencing maintenance-free?
Vinyl Fencing requires very little maintenance. Under normal conditions this maintenance is in the form of annual washing of the fence to keep it looking new. There is no staining or painting needed.
Can the Vinyl fence break?
Vinyl Fencing will only break if subjected to a direct impact (e.g. an automobile running into a fence line). Under normal use, the vinyl fence will not break when installed properly. Planks, pickets and rails are easily replaced if damaged. If you are in this situation and would like to order a part, refer to our Replacement Parts page in the Vinyl section for more instructions.
How does Vinyl Fence stand up in the wind?
Most vinyl fences are designed to withstand normal winds. The amount of wind that can be handled is dependent on the installation of the posts and horizontal rails. If installed according to Tennessee Valley Fence specifications, the fences are designed to stand up to above average wind loads. For example, our Privacy Fence can with stand over 80mph winds, and with correct installation can go over 100 mph.
Does Vinyl fencing expand?
It is normal for vinyl fence materials to expand and contract during temperature changes.
Will Vinyl Fence fade?
Under normal use, our 100% virgin vinyl fences will not fade. All our products are covered under manufacturer warranty for unusual fading or abnormal discoloration.
Will the Vinyl fence crack, chip, peel or rot?
During the life of the fence you should not expect to find surface cracking, peeling, chipping or rotting. Any unusual occurrences are covered under your lifetime warranty.
Help With Decision-Making…
What is the cost of Vinyl fencing compared to wood?
The cost of vinyl is amazingly similar to wood. Also if you calculate the cost of wood fence maintenance then vinyl is definitely a superior product and cheaper in the long run.
How safe is Vinyl fencing?
Because there are no protruding sharp screws, nails, and splinters, it is unlikely that your family and guests will suffer any injury, even if you decide to self-install. You will also find that the lack of taste in PVC material decreases the likelihood of horse chewing.
How does Vinyl fencing hold up to weed eaters?
As with all PVC and wood products, direct contact with lawn and garden equipment can cause damage to the posts. Use caution when operating any type of equipment near fence posts, especially commercial trimmers, which are more aggressive.
Will it mildew or collect mold?
Vinyl products will, when subjected to extended damp weather, collect mold and mildew. They are, however, easily cleaned with a solution of mild household detergent and water.
How do I clean Vinyl?
As with all exterior products, the fence will become dirty when exposed to the elements. A mild detergent and water should be sufficient to keep your fence or deck rail looking new. For tough stains, “soft scrub” or baking soda works well. Simple Green and steel wool also works to clean stubborn stains.
Are vinyl fences graffiti proof?
Although not classified as graffiti proof, vinyl fencing is easy to clean and paint comes off with just a little effort. It may require the use of a pressure washer or in extreme cases the use of lacquer thinner. A 400 grit sandpaper may be used when some spots will not come off using the above methods.
